Prony's method
Builds on Linear recurrence with constant coefficientsHankel matrixSystem of linear equationsRoot of a polynomial
Definition
Let , and suppose the numbers are samples of , where are distinct nonzero complex numbers and are nonzero complex numbers. Prony's method recovers the and in three steps.
- Solve the linear system for for .
- Compute the roots of the polynomial .
- Solve the Vandermonde system for for .
Remarks
The coefficients of satisfy step 1, since obeys the linear recurrence with characteristic polynomial . The matrix of step 1 is a Hankel matrix. It factors as with the Vandermonde matrix and . So is invertible under the hypotheses, and step 1 has a unique solution. Example: samples with give and , so , , , and then : . Non-example: is not such a sum with ; the step 1 equation reads and has no solution. With noisy data or more samples, one solves steps 1 and 3 in the least squares sense. The method is then sensitive to noise, and variants such as the matrix pencil method improve it.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
