Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proposition
Gram matrices are positive semidefinite
Statement
Let be an complex matrix. Then the matrix is positive semidefinite, where is the conjugate transpose. It is positive definite if and only if the columns of are linearly independent.
Remarks
The proof: . For a real matrix , the same holds for . Each Gram matrix has this form, so Gram matrices are positive semidefinite.
