Normal matrix

Builds on Conjugate transpose

Definition

Let AA be an n×nn \times n complex matrix. The matrix AA is normal when AA∗=A∗A,A A^* = A^* A, where A∗A^* is the conjugate transpose of AA.

Remarks

Hermitian, skew-Hermitian and unitary matrices are normal. A real matrix is normal when AAT=ATAA A^T = A^T A; real symmetric and orthogonal matrices are examples. The matrix (1101)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not normal. A matrix is normal if and only if its map on ℂn\C^n is a normal operator for the standard inner product.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
