Cholesky decomposition
Statement
Let be a positive definite complex Hermitian matrix. Then there is exactly one lower triangular matrix with positive real diagonal entries such that If is real, then is real.
Remarks
The factor is the Cholesky factor of . For example, . It needs about half the work of an LU decomposition, and it solves systems with positive definite . A positive semidefinite matrix also has a decomposition , but need not be unique.
