Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A basis of VV is a family (bi)i∈I(b_i)_{i \in I} of vectors of VV that is linearly independent and spans VV.

Remarks

A family (bi)i∈I(b_i)_{i \in I} is a basis if and only if each v∈Vv \in V is equal to ∑i∈Iaibi\sum_{i \in I} a_i b_i for exactly one finitely supported family of scalars (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I}. The scalars aia_i are the coordinates of vv in the basis. The standard basis e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n is a basis of FnF^n; the vectors (1,1)(1, 1) and (1,−1)(1, -1) form another basis of ℝ2\R^2. Every vector space has a basis, and all bases of a space have the same cardinality.
