Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Theorem
Change of basis formula
Statement
Let be a field and let and be finite-dimensional vector spaces over . Let be bases of , and let be bases of . Let be the change of basis matrix from to , and the change of basis matrix from to . Then, for each linear map , where denotes the matrix of in the given bases. In particular, for an endomorphism of and , , one gets .
Remarks
The formula follows from the matrix of a composition, applied to . For endomorphisms, the two matrices are similar. For linear maps between two spaces, the two matrices are equivalent.
