Definition

Let F,G ⁣:π’žβ†’π’ŸF, G \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D} be functors. A natural transformation α ⁣:Fβ‡’G\alpha \colon F \Rightarrow G is a family of morphisms Ξ±A ⁣:F(A)β†’G(A)\alpha_A \colon F(A) \to G(A) of π’Ÿ\mathcal{D}, one for each object AA of π’ž\mathcal{C}. The family must satisfy G(f)∘αA=Ξ±B∘F(f)G(f) \circ \alpha_A = \alpha_B \circ F(f) for every morphism f ⁣:Aβ†’Bf \colon A \to B of π’ž\mathcal{C}. The morphism Ξ±A\alpha_A is the component of Ξ±\alpha at AA. If every component is an isomorphism, Ξ±\alpha is a natural isomorphism, and FF and GG are naturally isomorphic, written Fβ‰…GF \cong G.

Remarks

The condition says that the naturality square with sides F(f)F(f), Ξ±B\alpha_B, Ξ±A\alpha_A and G(f)G(f) is a commutative diagram. Example: on vector spaces over a field KK, let evV ⁣:Vβ†’Vβˆ—βˆ—\mathrm{ev}_V \colon V \to V^{**} send vv to the map φ↦φ(v)\varphi \mapsto \varphi(v), where Vβˆ—V^* is the dual space. For a linear map f ⁣:Vβ†’Wf \colon V \to W and ψ∈Wβˆ—\psi \in W^*, both fβˆ—βˆ—(evV(v))f^{**}(\mathrm{ev}_V(v)) and evW(f(v))\mathrm{ev}_W(f(v)) send ψ\psi to ψ(f(v))\psi(f(v)). So ev\mathrm{ev} is a natural transformation from the identity functor to the double dual functor. On finite-dimensional spaces it is a natural isomorphism, by the canonical isomorphism with the double dual. Non-example: on the category of nonempty sets, choose for each set XX a point xX∈Xx_X \in X and let Ξ±X ⁣:Xβ†’X\alpha_X \colon X \to X be the constant map with value xXx_X. This family is not a natural transformation from the identity functor to itself. For a two-element set YY and the constant map f ⁣:Xβ†’Yf \colon X \to Y whose value is not xYx_Y, the condition would require f(xX)=xYf(x_X) = x_Y.
