Bilinear form

Builds on Vector space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A bilinear form on VV is a map B ⁣:V×V→FB \colon V \times V \to F such that, for all u,v,w∈Vu, v, w \in V and a∈Fa \in F:

  1. B(u+v,w)=B(u,w)+B(v,w)B(u + v, w) = B(u, w) + B(v, w) and B(au,w)=aB(u,w)B(au, w) = a B(u, w).
  2. B(u,v+w)=B(u,v)+B(u,w)B(u, v + w) = B(u, v) + B(u, w) and B(u,aw)=aB(u,w)B(u, aw) = a B(u, w).

Remarks

The dot product on ℝn\R^n is a bilinear form. For each n×nn \times n matrix MM over FF, the map B(x,y)=xTMyB(x, y) = x^T M y is a bilinear form on FnF^n. The bilinear forms on VV form a vector space over FF; if dim⁡V=n\dim V = n, it has dimension n2n^2. More generally, a bilinear map V×W→FV \times W \to F uses two different spaces.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
