Universal property of the tensor product
Builds on Tensor product of vector spacesBilinear formLinear map
Statement
Let be a field, and let , and be vector spaces over . Let be a bilinear map. Then there is exactly one linear map such that where is the tensor product.
Remarks
So the bilinear maps correspond one to one with the linear maps . This property determines up to a unique isomorphism that fixes the vectors . Uniqueness holds because the vectors span .
