Nondegenerate bilinear form

Builds on Bilinear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over FF. A bilinear form BB on VV is nondegenerate when, for each u∈Vu \in V, B(u,v)=0 for all v∈V  ⟹  u=0.B(u, v) = 0 \text{ for all } v \in V \implies u = 0. A bilinear form that is not nondegenerate is degenerate.

Remarks

BB is nondegenerate if and only if its matrix in a basis has a nonzero determinant. So, in finite dimensions, the condition in the first argument is equivalent to the same condition in the second argument. BB is nondegenerate if and only if u↦B(u,⋅)u \mapsto B(u, \cdot) is an isomorphism from VV to its dual space. Each inner product is nondegenerate; the form B(x,y)=x1y1B(x, y) = x_1 y_1 on ℝ2\R^2 is degenerate.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
