Symmetric bilinear form

Builds on Bilinear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A bilinear form BB on VV is symmetric when B(u,v)=B(v,u)for all u,v∈V.B(u, v) = B(v, u) \qquad \text{for all } u, v \in V.

Remarks

In each basis, BB is symmetric if and only if its matrix is a symmetric matrix. The dot product on ℝn\R^n is symmetric. If the characteristic of FF is not 22, symmetric bilinear forms correspond one to one with quadratic forms.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
