Diagonalisation of a quadratic form
Builds on Quadratic formOrthogonal family for a bilinear form
Statement
Let be a field of characteristic not , and let be a vector space over of finite dimension . Let be a quadratic form on . Then has a basis and there are such that, for all ,
Remarks
The basis is orthogonal for the associated symmetric bilinear form, and . In matrix terms, each symmetric matrix over has an invertible such that is diagonal. The numbers are not unique; for example, each can be multiplied by a nonzero square. Over , the orthogonal diagonalisation of the principal axis theorem is a special case.
