Positive definite quadratic form

Builds on Quadratic form

Definition

Let VV be a finite-dimensional real vector space, and let QQ be a quadratic form on VV. The form QQ is positive definite when Q(v)>0for all v∈V with v≠0.Q(v) > 0 \qquad \text{for all } v \in V \text{ with } v \ne 0.

Remarks

Q(x)=xTAxQ(x) = x^T A x with AA symmetric is positive definite if and only if AA is a positive definite matrix. Equivalently, the signature of QQ is (n,0,0)(n, 0, 0), with n=dim⁡Vn = \dim V. The form x2+y2x^2 + y^2 is positive definite on ℝ2\R^2; the forms x2−y2x^2 - y^2 and x2x^2 are not. QQ is positive definite if and only if its associated symmetric bilinear form is an inner product.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
