Definition

Let FF be a field and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. An n×nn \times n elementary matrix over FF is a matrix that results from the identity matrix InI_n by one elementary row operation. There are three types:

  1. PijP_{ij}, for i≠ji \ne j: exchange rows ii and jj of InI_n.
  2. Di(c)D_i(c), for c≠0c \ne 0: multiply row ii of InI_n by cc.
  3. Tij(c)T_{ij}(c), for i≠ji \ne j and c∈Fc \in F: add cc times row jj of InI_n to row ii.

Remarks

For each n×pn \times p matrix AA, the product EAEA is the result of the same row operation on AA. The product AEAE performs the matching column operation on AA. Each elementary matrix is invertible, and its inverse is an elementary matrix of the same type. Each invertible matrix over a field is a product of elementary matrices.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
