Example
Let . The Birkhoff polytope is the set of doubly stochastic matrices, seen as points of : It is bounded, since , and is cut out by finitely many linear inequalities and equations, so it is a convex polytope. By the Birkhoff–von Neumann theorem, is the convex hull of the permutation matrices, and these are its vertices. The equations have rank , so . For the facets are the sets .
Remarks
For , is the segment of matrices , , with the two permutation matrices as endpoints. For , is a -dimensional polytope with vertices and facets. Its role in optimisation is that a linear function on attains its maximum at a permutation matrix, which solves the assignment problem by linear programming.
