Space of matrices

Builds on MatrixMatrix additionScalar multiplication of matrices

Example

Let FF be a field and let m,n≥1m, n \ge 1. The set Mm×n(F)M_{m \times n}(F) of m×nm \times n matrices over FF is a vector space over FF, with matrix addition and scalar multiplication. Its zero vector is the zero matrix. The matrices EijE_{ij}, with entry 11 in position (i,j)(i, j) and 00 elsewhere, form a basis, so dim⁡Mm×n(F)=mn\dim M_{m \times n}(F) = mn.

Remarks

The map that lists the entries of a matrix row by row is a linear isomorphism Mm×n(F)→FmnM_{m \times n}(F) \to F^{mn}. The space Mm×n(F)M_{m \times n}(F) is isomorphic to the space of linear maps from FnF^n to FmF^m. The symmetric n×nn \times n matrices form a subspace of dimension n(n+1)/2n(n+1)/2.
