Pivot

Builds on Row echelon form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be a matrix over FF in row echelon form. A pivot of AA is the leading entry of a nonzero row of AA, that is, the first nonzero entry of that row. A pivot column of AA is a column that contains a pivot. For a general matrix BB, take a row echelon form of BB that is row equivalent to BB. The pivot positions of BB are the positions of the pivots of this form.

Remarks

The pivot positions do not depend on the choice of the row echelon form. The number of pivots is the rank of the matrix. In the system Ax=bAx = b, the unknowns of the pivot columns are the basic variables, and the other unknowns are the free variables. In numerical work, partial pivoting chooses as pivot an entry of largest absolute value in its column, to reduce rounding errors.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
