Statement

Let qq be a prime power and let XX be a smooth, geometrically irreducible projective variety of dimension nn over the finite field 𝔽q\F_q. For m≥1m \ge 1 let NmN_m be the number of rational points of XX over 𝔽qm\F_{q^m}. The zeta function of XX is the power series Z(X,t)=exp⁡(∑m≥1Nmmtm),Z(X, t) = \exp\Big(\sum_{m \ge 1} \frac{N_m}{m} t^m\Big), in the ring of formal power series over ℚ\Q. Then the following hold.

  1. Rationality: Z(X,t)=P1(t)P3(t)⋯P2n−1(t)P0(t)P2(t)⋯P2n(t)Z(X, t) = \dfrac{P_1(t) P_3(t) \cdots P_{2n-1}(t)}{P_0(t) P_2(t) \cdots P_{2n}(t)} with Pi(t)∈ℤ[t]P_i(t) \in \Z[t], P0(t)=1−tP_0(t) = 1 - t and P2n(t)=1−qntP_{2n}(t) = 1 - q^n t.
  2. Functional equation: Z(X,1qnt)=± qnE/2 tE Z(X,t)Z\big(X, \tfrac{1}{q^n t}\big) = \pm\, q^{nE/2} \, t^{E} \, Z(X, t), where EE is the self-intersection number of the diagonal in X×XX \times X.
  3. Riemann hypothesis: for 1≤i≤2n−11 \le i \le 2n - 1, Pi(t)=∏j(1−αijt)P_i(t) = \prod_j (1 - \alpha_{ij} t), where the αij\alpha_{ij} are algebraic integers with ∣αij∣=qi/2\abs{\alpha_{ij}} = q^{i/2} for every complex absolute value.
  4. Betti numbers: suppose XX is the good reduction modulo a prime of a smooth projective variety YY over a number field K⊂ℂK \subset \C. Then deg⁡Pi\deg P_i is the ii-th Betti number of the complex manifold Y(ℂ)Y(\C).

Remarks

In the proof one takes Pi(t)=det⁡(1−tF∣Hi(Xˉ,ℚℓ))P_i(t) = \det(1 - tF \mid H^i(\bar{X}, \Q_\ell)), where FF is the Frobenius acting on ℓ-adic cohomology. The Grothendieck–Lefschetz trace formula then gives rationality, Poincaré duality gives the functional equation, and EE is the Euler characteristic of Xˉ\bar{X}. Dwork proved rationality in 1960 by pp-adic methods, Grothendieck proved rationality and the functional equation with étale cohomology, and Deligne proved the Riemann hypothesis in 1974. Example: for an elliptic curve XX over 𝔽q\F_q, Z(X,t)=1−at+qt2(1−t)(1−qt)Z(X, t) = \dfrac{1 - a t + q t^2}{(1 - t)(1 - q t)} with a=q+1−N1a = q + 1 - N_1. The Riemann hypothesis says that the two roots of 1−at+qt21 - a t + q t^2 have inverses of absolute value q\sqrt{q}, which is Hasse's theorem ∣a∣≤2q\abs{a} \le 2\sqrt{q}.

For a student

Point (3) is the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for the zeta function of a variety over a finite field. It gives sharp estimates of point counts that are used throughout number theory. Weil proved the conjectures for curves and abelian varieties, and they motivated the creation of étale and ℓ\ell-adic cohomology. The local zeta functions Z(X,t)Z(X, t) at the primes of a number field are the factors of the Hasse–Weil zeta function. Grothendieck proposed his standard conjectures as a route to point (3), and they would give a second proof of it.
