Degree of a polynomial

Builds on Polynomial ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let f=a0+a1x+⋯+anxnf = a_0 + a_1 x + \dots + a_n x^n be a polynomial in R[x]R[x]. If f≠0f \neq 0, the degree deg⁡f\deg f of ff is the largest integer dd with ad≠0a_d \neq 0. The degree of the zero polynomial is deg⁡0=−∞\deg 0 = -\infty.

Remarks

The degree of 3x4−x+23x^4 - x + 2 in ℤ[x]\mathbb{Z}[x] is 44. A nonzero constant polynomial has degree 00. Some authors leave deg⁡0\deg 0 undefined, or set it to −1-1. The convention −∞-\infty makes the formula deg⁡(fg)=deg⁡f+deg⁡g\deg(f g) = \deg f + \deg g hold also for f=0f = 0 or g=0g = 0. For all f,g∈R[x]f, g \in R[x], deg⁡(f+g)≤max⁡(deg⁡f,deg⁡g)\deg(f + g) \le \max(\deg f, \deg g). The coefficient ada_d with d=deg⁡fd = \deg f is the leading coefficient of ff.
