Remez algorithm
Builds on Minimax approximationContinuous functionDegree of a polynomial
Definition
Let be continuous, let , and let be the real polynomials of degree at most . The Remez algorithm computes the minimax approximation of in by the following iteration.
- Choose a reference set of points .
- Solve the linear system , , for the coefficients of and the number .
- Let . Replace the reference set by points in at which alternates in sign, for all , and for some .
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until is below a chosen tolerance.
Remarks
The system in step 2 has a unique solution for any distinct points. After each step 2, the minimax error satisfies , so the gap between the two bounds measures the progress.
Example: on , , reference set . Step 2 for gives , and , so and . The error has maximum , so the algorithm stops with the minimax line .
Non-example: solving at points is plain interpolation, not a Remez step. It lacks the levelled error term , and its error need not alternate in sign with equal size.
For continuous the iterates converge to the minimax polynomial. The method also applies to rational approximation and to other Chebyshev systems in place of .
