Field theory and polynomials Algebraic closure Theorem
Uniqueness of the algebraic closure
Statement
Let be a field, and let and be algebraic closures of . Then there is a ring isomorphism with for every .
Remarks
The proof uses Zorn's lemma on the partial isomorphisms between subfields of and that fix . The isomorphism is not unique in general. For example, complex conjugation and the identity are two such isomorphisms from to over . So one often writes "the" algebraic closure . The statement is an infinite form of the uniqueness of splitting fields.
