Maximal ideal

Builds on Ideal

Definition

Let RR be a ring. An ideal MM of RR is maximal if it has these two properties.

  1. M≠RM \neq R.
  2. For every ideal II of RR with M⊆IM \subseteq I, either I=MI = M or I=RI = R.

Remarks

The definition is the same for left, right and two-sided ideals, with ideals of the same type in condition 2. In ℤ\mathbb{Z}, the ideal nℤn\mathbb{Z} with n≥0n \ge 0 is maximal if and only if nn is a prime number. In a commutative ring RR, an ideal MM is maximal if and only if R/MR/M is a field. The zero ideal of a field is its only maximal ideal.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
