Field theory and polynomials Theorem
Every polynomial has a root in some extension field
Builds on Adjoining a root of a polynomialK[x]/(f) is a field iff f is irreducibleIrreducible polynomialPolynomial ring over a UFD is a UFD
Statement
Let be a field and let with . Then there is a field extension with such that has a root in .
Remarks
The proof: let be an irreducible factor of in . Adjoining a root of gives the field of degree over . The class of in is a root of , and so of . The irreducible factor exists because is a unique factorisation domain. Repeating the step gives a splitting field of .
