Definition

Let RR be an integral domain. On the set of pairs (a,b)(a, b) with a,b∈Ra, b \in R and b≠0b \neq 0, let (a,b)∼(c,d)(a, b) \sim (c, d) if ad=bca d = b c. This is an equivalence relation. Write a/ba/b for the class of (a,b)(a, b). The field of fractions Frac⁡(R)\operatorname{Frac}(R) is the set of these classes, with the operations ab+cd=ad+bcbd,ab⋅cd=acbd.\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a d + b c}{b d}, \qquad \frac{a}{b} \cdot \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a c}{b d}. It is a field, and the map R→Frac⁡(R)R \to \operatorname{Frac}(R), a↦a/1a \mapsto a/1, is an injective ring homomorphism.

Remarks

The product bdb d is not zero because RR is an integral domain. This makes the operations well defined. The inverse of a nonzero a/ba/b is b/ab/a. Universal property: every injective ring homomorphism from RR to a field KK extends to exactly one ring homomorphism from Frac⁡(R)\operatorname{Frac}(R) to KK. The field of fractions of the polynomial ring K[x]K[x] over a field KK is the field K(x)K(x) of rational functions.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
