Associative rings and algebras Theorem

Correspondence theorem for rings

Builds on Quotient ringIdeal

Statement

Let RR be a ring, let II be a two-sided ideal of RR and let π ⁣:R→R/I\pi \colon R \to R/I be the quotient map. Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be the set of the left ideals JJ of RR with I⊆JI \subseteq J. Let ℬ\mathcal{B} be the set of the left ideals of R/IR/I. The map 𝒜→ℬ\mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{B}, J↦J/I=π(J)J \mapsto J/I = \pi(J), is a bijection. Its inverse is K↦π−1(K)K \mapsto \pi^{-1}(K). This bijection and its inverse preserve inclusion.

Remarks

The same bijection holds for right ideals, for two-sided ideals, and for subrings that contain II. For two-sided ideals J⊇IJ \supseteq I, the third isomorphism theorem gives (R/I)/(J/I)≅R/J(R/I)/(J/I) \cong R/J. The ideals of ℤ/12ℤ\mathbb{Z}/12\mathbb{Z} correspond to the ideals dℤd\mathbb{Z} with d∣12d \mid 12, so there are six of them.
