Associative rings and algebras Theorem

Third isomorphism theorem for rings

Builds on Quotient ringRing isomorphism

Statement

Let RR be a ring and let I⊆JI \subseteq J be two-sided ideals of RR. Then J/I={a+I:a∈J}J/I = \{a + I : a \in J\} is a two-sided ideal of the quotient ring R/IR/I. The map (R/I)/(J/I)→R/J(R/I)/(J/I) \to R/J, (a+I)+J/I↦a+J(a + I) + J/I \mapsto a + J, is a ring isomorphism.

Remarks

The proof applies the first isomorphism theorem to the map R/I→R/JR/I \to R/J, a+I↦a+Ja + I \mapsto a + J. It is surjective, and its kernel is J/IJ/I. For example, 6ℤ⊆2ℤ6\mathbb{Z} \subseteq 2\mathbb{Z}, and (ℤ/6ℤ)/(2ℤ/6ℤ)≅ℤ/2ℤ(\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z})/(2\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z}) \cong \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}.
