Field extension

Builds on FieldSubfield

Definition

Let KK and LL be fields. The field LL is an extension of KK if KK is a subfield of LL. One writes L/KL/K for this field extension.

Remarks

Often one also calls LL an extension of KK when there is an injective ring homomorphism K→LK \to L. Then one identifies KK with its image. An extension L/KL/K makes LL a vector space over KK. Its dimension is the degree of the extension. Examples: ℂ/ℝ\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R}, ℝ/ℚ\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Q} and ℚ(2)/ℚ\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})/\mathbb{Q}. The notation L/KL/K does not mean a quotient.
