Field theory and polynomials Finite fields Theorem
The order of a finite field is a prime power
Builds on Finite fieldThe characteristic of an integral domain is zero or primePrime subfieldDegree of a field extension
Statement
Let be a finite field. Then the characteristic of is a prime number , and with .
Remarks
The proof: a finite field has nonzero characteristic, and the characteristic of a domain is or prime. The prime subfield is , and is a vector space of dimension over it, so it has elements. So there is no field with or elements. The converse, that a field of order exists for each , is the existence theorem.
