Degree of a field extension

Builds on Field extension

Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension. The field LL is a vector space over KK, with the addition of LL and the multiplication K×L→LK \times L \to L of LL. The degree of L/KL/K is the dimension of this vector space, and it is written [L:K][L : K].

Remarks

The degree is a positive integer or an infinite cardinal. One has [L:K]=1[L : K] = 1 if and only if L=KL = K. Examples: [ℂ:ℝ]=2[\mathbb{C} : \mathbb{R}] = 2, with the basis 1,i1, i. Also, [ℚ(2):ℚ]=2[\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}) : \mathbb{Q}] = 2, with the basis 1,21, \sqrt{2}. The field ℝ\mathbb{R} has infinite degree over ℚ\mathbb{Q}, because ℚ\mathbb{Q} is countable and ℝ\mathbb{R} is not.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
