Subfields of a finite field
Builds on Finite fieldTower lawEvery element of a finite field of order q satisfies x^q = xSubfield
Statement
Let be a prime number and let . For each divisor of , the field has exactly one subfield of order , namely . It has no other subfields.
Remarks
If is a subfield of of order , then by the tower law, so divides . For example, the subfields of are , , and . The subfield of order is the fixed field of , where is the Frobenius automorphism.
