Definition

Let L/KL/K be a field extension. An intermediate field of L/KL/K is a subfield EE of LL with K⊆EK \subseteq E.

Remarks

Then L/EL/E and E/KE/K are field extensions, and one calls K⊆E⊆LK \subseteq E \subseteq L a tower of fields. The fields KK and LL are intermediate fields of L/KL/K. For example, ℚ(2)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}) is an intermediate field of ℝ/ℚ\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Q}. The fundamental theorem of Galois theory describes the intermediate fields of a Galois extension.
