Simple extension

Builds on Field generated by adjoining elements

Definition

A field extension L/KL/K is simple if there is an element θ∈L\theta \in L with L=K(θ)L = K(\theta). Such an element θ\theta is a primitive element, or a generator, of L/KL/K.

Remarks

The extensions ℂ/ℝ\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R}, generated by ii, and ℚ(2)/ℚ\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})/\mathbb{Q}, generated by 2\sqrt{2}, are simple. The extension ℚ(3,7)/ℚ\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3}, \sqrt{7})/\mathbb{Q} is simple, with the generator 3+7\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{7}. By the primitive element theorem, every finite separable extension is simple. For finite fields, the term "primitive element" usually means a generator of the multiplicative group, which is a stronger condition.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
