Characteristic of a ring

Builds on Ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring. For a positive integer nn, write n⋅1=1+1+⋯+1n \cdot 1 = 1 + 1 + \dots + 1, with nn terms. If there is a positive integer nn with n⋅1=0n \cdot 1 = 0 in RR, then the characteristic of RR is the least such nn. If there is no such nn, then the characteristic of RR is 00.

Remarks

The rings ℤ\mathbb{Z}, ℚ\mathbb{Q}, ℝ\mathbb{R} and ℂ\mathbb{C} have characteristic 00. For n≥1n \ge 1, the ring ℤ/nℤ\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} has characteristic nn. The characteristic of RR is the nonnegative generator of the kernel of the unique ring homomorphism ℤ→R\mathbb{Z} \to R. The characteristic of an integral domain is zero or prime.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
