Commutative algebra Theorem

Freshman's dream

Builds on Commutative ringCharacteristic of a ring

Statement

Let pp be a prime number and let RR be a commutative ring of characteristic pp. Then (x+y)p=xp+yp(x + y)^p = x^p + y^p for all x,y∈Rx, y \in R.

Remarks

The proof uses the binomial theorem. For 0<k<p0 < k < p, the prime pp divides the binomial coefficient (pk)\binom{p}{k}, so these terms vanish in RR. By induction, (x+y)pn=xpn+ypn(x + y)^{p^n} = x^{p^n} + y^{p^n} for every n≥0n \ge 0. The identity gives the Frobenius endomorphism. In ℝ\mathbb{R} the identity is false: (1+1)2=4(1 + 1)^2 = 4 and 12+12=21^2 + 1^2 = 2.
