Field theory and polynomials Definition
Algebraic closure
Definition
Let be a field. An algebraic closure of is a field extension such that is algebraic and is algebraically closed.
Remarks
The field is an algebraic closure of , by the fundamental theorem of algebra. The field of algebraic numbers is an algebraic closure of . The field is not, because is not algebraic. If is infinite, then has the same cardinality as . If is finite, then is countably infinite. An algebraic closure is a largest algebraic extension of , and a smallest algebraically closed field that contains .
