Definition
Let be an algebraic extension. An element is separable over if its minimal polynomial over is a separable polynomial. The extension is separable if every element of is separable over .
Remarks
An irreducible polynomial over is separable if and only if its derivative is not the zero polynomial. So every algebraic extension of a field of characteristic is separable. Every algebraic extension of a finite field is separable. For a prime and the field of rational functions, the extension is not separable: the minimal polynomial equals .
