Formal derivative

Builds on Polynomial ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let f=a0+a1x+⋯+anxn∈R[x]f = a_0 + a_1 x + \dots + a_n x^n \in R[x]. The formal derivative of ff is the polynomial f′=a1+2a2x+3a3x2+⋯+nanxn−1,f' = a_1 + 2 a_2 x + 3 a_3 x^2 + \dots + n a_n x^{n-1}, where kakk a_k is the sum of kk copies of aka_k.

Remarks

The derivative is additive, and (rf)′=rf′(r f)' = r f' for each constant r∈Rr \in R. If RR is commutative, the product rule holds: (fg)′=f′g+fg′(f g)' = f' g + f g'. In characteristic pp, the derivative of xpx^p is pxp−1=0p x^{p-1} = 0. So a nonconstant polynomial can have derivative 00. The derivative detects repeated roots.
