Principal ideal

Builds on Ideal generated by a subset

Definition

Let RR be a ring. A left ideal II of RR is principal if there is an element a∈Ra \in R such that I=(a)I = (a), the left ideal generated by {a}\{a\}.

Remarks

The left ideal generated by aa is Ra={ra:r∈R}R a = \{r a : r \in R\}. If RR is commutative, the principal ideal (a)(a) is the set of the multiples of aa. Every ideal of ℤ\mathbb{Z} is principal: each one is nℤn\mathbb{Z} for some integer n≥0n \ge 0. In ℤ[x]\mathbb{Z}[x], the ideal (2,x)(2, x) is not principal.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
