Commutative algebra Definition

Ideal generated by a subset

Builds on IdealCommutative ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let X⊆RX \subseteq R be a subset. The left ideal generated by XX is the intersection of all the left ideals of RR that contain XX. The notation for it is (X)(X). It is the smallest left ideal of RR that contains XX.

Remarks

The left ideal (X)(X) is the set of the finite sums r1x1+⋯+rnxnr_1 x_1 + \dots + r_n x_n with n≥0n \ge 0, ri∈Rr_i \in R and xi∈Xx_i \in X. For a finite set, one writes (x1,…,xn)(x_1, \dots, x_n) for ({x1,…,xn})(\{x_1, \dots, x_n\}). In ℤ\mathbb{Z}, the ideal (4,6)(4, 6) is 2ℤ2\mathbb{Z}. An ideal generated by one element is a principal ideal.
