Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring. The ring RR is Noetherian if the set of its ideals, ordered by inclusion, satisfies the ascending chain condition. That is, for every chain I1⊆I2⊆…I_1 \subseteq I_2 \subseteq \dots of ideals of RR, there is NN with In=INI_n = I_N for all n≥Nn \ge N.

Remarks

The ring RR is Noetherian if and only if every ideal of RR is finitely generated. Every field and every principal ideal domain is Noetherian. By Hilbert's basis theorem, R[x1,…,xn]R[x_1, \dots, x_n] is Noetherian when RR is. The polynomial ring in infinitely many variables x1,x2,…x_1, x_2, \dots over a field is not Noetherian: (x1)⊂(x1,x2)⊂…(x_1) \subset (x_1, x_2) \subset \dots never stops. For a noncommutative ring, one defines left and right Noetherian rings with left and right ideals.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
