Commutative algebra Theorem

In a PID a nonzero element is irreducible iff it generates a maximal ideal

Builds on Principal ideal domainIrreducible elementMaximal idealPrincipal ideal

Statement

Let RR be a principal ideal domain and let p∈Rp \in R with p≠0p \neq 0. Then pp is irreducible if and only if the principal ideal (p)(p) is a maximal ideal.

Remarks

The proof: an ideal II with (p)⊆I(p) \subseteq I is (a)(a) with a∣pa \mid p. If pp is irreducible, then aa is a unit or an associate of pp, so I=RI = R or I=(p)I = (p). A consequence is that R/(p)R/(p) is a field for each irreducible pp. For example, ℚ[x]/(x2−2)\mathbb{Q}[x]/(x^2 - 2) is a field. In a principal ideal domain, every nonzero prime ideal is maximal.
