Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let a,b∈Ra, b \in R. The elements aa and bb are associates, written a∼ba \sim b, if there is a unit u∈Ru \in R with b=uab = u a.

Remarks

Being associates is an equivalence relation. In an integral domain, a∼ba \sim b if and only if a∣ba \mid b and b∣ab \mid a, if and only if (a)=(b)(a) = (b). In ℤ\mathbb{Z}, the associates of nn are nn and −n-n. In ℤ[i]\mathbb{Z}[i], the associates of 1+i1 + i are 1+i1 + i, −1−i-1 - i, −1+i-1 + i and 1−i1 - i.
