Commutative algebra Definition
Prime element
Definition
Let be a commutative ring. An element is prime if it has these three properties.
- .
- is not a unit.
- For all , if , then or .
Remarks
A nonzero is prime if and only if the principal ideal is a prime ideal. The prime elements of are the numbers and with a prime number. In an integral domain, prime elements are irreducible.
