Degree of exactness of a quadrature rule
Builds on Quadrature rulePolynomial functionDegree of a polynomial
Definition
Let be a quadrature rule on , and let . The rule has degree of exactness if:
- for every real polynomial of degree at most ;
- for some polynomial of degree .
Remarks
By linearity, clause 1 holds if and only if for . The degree of exactness of an -node rule is at most : for , of degree , one has . A rule has degree of exactness at least if and only if it is interpolatory. Example: the midpoint rule with has degree : it is exact for and , while for it gives instead of . Non-example: the left endpoint rule does not have degree , since for it gives instead of ; its degree is . Some authors call it the degree of precision or the algebraic degree of accuracy.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
