Minimax approximation
Definition
Let be real numbers and let be a continuous function on the interval . Let be an integer and let be the set of real polynomials of degree at most . A minimax approximation of degree to is a polynomial such that The common value is the minimax error .
Remarks
Example: for on and , the polynomial is the minimax approximation, with error . Check: takes the values at . If a line had everywhere, then , and , which no linear function can do, since is the mean of and .
Non-example: the Taylor polynomial of at is not the minimax approximation of degree on . Its error is never negative, so lowering the line a little makes the largest error smaller.
A minimax approximation exists and is unique for every continuous . It is characterised by equioscillation: the error attains its largest absolute value at points with alternating signs. In terms of norms, minimises over , where .
