Differences of polynomials vanish beyond the degree

Statement
Let be a commutative ring, let , and let be a polynomial. Let with , where the degree of the zero polynomial is . Then the -th forward difference of the polynomial function on with step is zero:
Remarks
The key step is that lowers the degree: for , has degree less than , and sends constants to . Induction on then gives the claim. The same computation shows more: if has degree and leading coefficient , then is the constant . Example: for and , the third differences of are all , and the fourth differences are . Over there is a converse: a function with agrees on with a polynomial of degree less than .
Going deeper
For a student
The fact gives a practical test: if a table of values has constant -th differences, the data fit a polynomial of degree . With the expansion of iterated differences in shifts it yields identities such as for . Combined with Newton's forward difference formula, it shows that a polynomial of degree is determined by its values at equally spaced points. It is then given by a finite Newton series.
