Statement
Let be an additive commutative monoid, let be an additive abelian group, let , and let be a function. Let be the -th forward difference of with step . Then for every and every , where is the binomial coefficient.
Remarks
Write , where is the shift operator and is the identity. The operators and commute, so the binomial theorem gives , and . A direct proof is an induction on with Pascal's rule. Example: for the formula reads . With , and this gives .

For a student
The formula is the inverse of Newton's forward difference formula, which writes shifted values in terms of differences. Together the two formulas say that the sequences and are each other's binomial transform. The second difference , divided by , is the standard finite difference approximation of . Combined with the fact that differences of polynomials vanish beyond the degree, it gives identities. An example is for .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
