Statement

Let MM be an additive commutative monoid, let GG be an additive abelian group, let h∈Mh \in M, and let f ⁣:M→Gf \colon M \to G be a function. Let Δhkf\Delta_h^k f be the kk-th forward difference of ff with step hh. Then for every n∈ℕn \in \N and every x∈Mx \in M, f(x+nh)=∑k=0n(nk)Δhkf(x),f(x + nh) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{n}{k} \Delta_h^k f(x), where (nk)\binom{n}{k} is the binomial coefficient.

Remarks

The shift operator satisfies Eh=I+ΔhE_h = I + \Delta_h, and II commutes with Δh\Delta_h. So the binomial theorem gives Ehn=∑k(nk)ΔhkE_h^n = \sum_k \binom{n}{k} \Delta_h^k, which is the formula applied at xx. Example: for f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2, h=1h = 1 and x=0x = 0, the differences at 00 are f(0)=0f(0) = 0, Δf(0)=1\Delta f(0) = 1, Δ2f(0)=2\Delta^2 f(0) = 2, so f(n)=n+2(n2)=n+n(n−1)=n2f(n) = n + 2\binom{n}{2} = n + n(n-1) = n^2. Let f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R and h≠0h \ne 0, and replace the top entry nn of (nk)\binom{n}{k} by a real number ss. This gives the Newton forward interpolation polynomial p(x0+sh)=∑k=0n(sk)Δhkf(x0),(sk)=s(s−1)⋯(s−k+1)k!.p(x_0 + sh) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{s}{k} \Delta_h^k f(x_0), \qquad \binom{s}{k} = \frac{s(s-1)\cdots(s-k+1)}{k!}. It is the unique polynomial of degree at most nn that agrees with ff at x0,x0+h,…,x0+nhx_0, x_0 + h, \dots, x_0 + nh.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula and the expansion of iterated differences in shifts are inverse to each other: they express the binomial transform and its inverse. In numerical analysis it gives the interpolation polynomial at equally spaced nodes, a special case of polynomial interpolation. Letting n→∞n \to \infty with real ss leads to the Newton series of ff. Over the pp-adic integers, the same expansion with infinitely many terms is Mahler's theorem.
