Difference and functional equations Definition
Finite difference
Builds on Function
Definition
Let be a function, and let with . The finite difference of with offsets and is the function For a step , the three standard cases are:
- the forward difference , with and ;
- the backward difference , with and ;
- the central difference , with and .
Remarks
Example: for and , the forward difference is . Non-example: is not a finite difference, since it is a sum of values and not a difference. Dividing by gives the difference quotient . The same formulas make sense for functions from an abelian group to an abelian group, and for sequences, where the step is . See the forward difference operator, the backward difference operator and the central difference.
