Mahler's theorem

Builds on p-adic integerp-adic numberContinuous functionHigher-order differencesUniform convergence

Statement

Let pp be a prime, let ℤp\Z_p be the ring of pp-adic integers, and let ℚp\Q_p be the field of pp-adic numbers. For k∈ℕk \in \N and x∈ℤpx \in \Z_p let (xk)=x(x−1)⋯(x−k+1)k!\binom{x}{k} = \frac{x(x-1)\cdots(x-k+1)}{k!}. Let f ⁣:ℤp→ℚpf \colon \Z_p \to \Q_p be a continuous function, and let ak=Δkf(0)a_k = \Delta^k f(0) be its kk-th forward difference at 00 with step 11. Then ak→0a_k \to 0 in ℚp\Q_p, and f(x)=∑k=0∞ak(xk)for all x∈ℤp,f(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} a_k \binom{x}{k} \quad \text{for all } x \in \Z_p, where the series converges uniformly on ℤp\Z_p. Conversely, for every sequence (ak)(a_k) in ℚp\Q_p with ak→0a_k \to 0, this series defines a continuous function f ⁣:ℤp→ℚpf \colon \Z_p \to \Q_p with Δkf(0)=ak\Delta^k f(0) = a_k for all kk.

Remarks

The binomial polynomials (xk)\binom{x}{k} take integer values on ℕ\N, which is dense in ℤp\Z_p, so they map ℤp\Z_p into ℤp\Z_p; hence ∣(xk)∣p≤1\abs{\binom{x}{k}}_p \le 1 and the series converges uniformly when ak→0a_k \to 0. On ℕ\N the expansion is Newton's forward difference formula, and both sides are continuous, so the main point is that ak→0a_k \to 0. This is proved by showing that Δpm\Delta^{p^m} is small on continuous functions for large mm, using the expansion of Δpm\Delta^{p^m} in shifts and the divisibility of binomial coefficients by pp. Moreover, sup⁡x∈ℤp∣f(x)∣p=max⁡k∣ak∣p\sup_{x \in \Z_p} \abs{f(x)}_p = \max_k \abs{a_k}_p, so the functions (xk)\binom{x}{k} form an orthonormal basis of the Banach space of continuous functions ℤp→ℚp\Z_p \to \Q_p. Example: for u∈ℤpu \in \Z_p with ∣u−1∣p<1\abs{u - 1}_p < 1, the function x↦uxx \mapsto u^x is continuous, and its expansion is ∑k(u−1)k(xk)\sum_k (u - 1)^k \binom{x}{k}, with ak=(u−1)k→0a_k = (u-1)^k \to 0.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem identifies the space of continuous functions ℤp→ℚp\Z_p \to \Q_p with the space of null sequences, isometrically for the sup norm. It is a basic tool in pp-adic analysis, for example to construct pp-adic interpolations of functions defined on the natural numbers, and to describe pp-adic measures by their moments. It is the pp-adic counterpart of the Newton series expansion, where in the real case convergence is a delicate question.
